Babassu Oil Production Unit

About

Sabor de Todo Dia is a babassu oil production unit run by a collective of thirty people in Vitória do Mearim, Maranhão. The refurbishment and extension project expands the existing facility into a continuous space for drying, pressing and bottling. A new roof weaves old and new areas together, and a drying greenhouse holds production through the rainy season, when open-air drying would otherwise interrupt the work. The project was developed through participatory design, learning the steps of the craft from those who shape it and translating them into space through models and drawings shared at every stage. By processing the nut in-house, the collective keeps the added value of the final product, bypassing intermediaries and significantly increasing household income.
